Traditionally, SUVs are thought to be gas-guzzlers, but lately, more and more SUVs, especially in the compact and mid-size segment, are going the hybrid route. One of the reasons hybrid SUVs are gaining so much popularity is that they are more fuel-efficient than their gasoline counterparts. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is one such hybrid SUV. It comes with a Hybrid powertrain comprising a 2.5-Liter L4HV DOHC 16-valve D-4S injection Atkinson-cycle engine with Dual VVT-iE with intake controlled by an electric motor.

The hybrid powertrain makes 243 net horsepower, including 186 hp produced by the combustion engine and 175 pound-feet of torque, and is paired with an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission (ECVT). The Highlander Hybrid can be availed with FWD or an optional Electronic On-Demand AWD system.
